Take this journey seriously, give it only your very best, and you will have the ride of your life!
All aboard the Music Express!
Music Express is an auditioned choir consisting of fourth and fifth grade students from Grace Miller, La Verne Heights, Oak Mesa and Shull Elementary Schools. Students rehearse from January-May on Tuesday afternoons from 4:00-5:30 p.m. at Oak Mesa Elementary School. Parents must arrange for transportation to and from rehearsals.
Students perform varied repertoire, drawing from contemporary and traditional choral literature, multicultural traditions, as well as from musical theatre and popular music.
Music Express singers focus on healthy vocal technique and demonstrate an evolving understanding of musicianship – i.e. music theory, sight-singing and performance skills. Students learn discipline, develop leadership skills, and proudly represent each of their respective elementary schools and Bonita Unified School District. Behavior and performance standards are set high for students in rehearsal and performances.
Singers are chosen on the basis of ability, musical knowledge, attendance, behavior and leadership skills exhibited in school chorus and in the classroom. Careful consideration is given to creating a well-balanced group.
The selection process is ongoing in the fall during school chorus rehearsals and during classroom music time. Additional auditions are held during school chorus rehearsal time if needed. Because students are drawn from four different elementary schools, only a select group of students will be selected from each school. Preference is given to a fifth grader if their audition is at the same level as a fourth grader's.
Music Express reaches performance levels that qualify them to perform at esteemed venues such as Knotts Berry Farm. Members must also participate in their own school chorus. Band students who wish to audition for Music Express will also have the opportunity to audition.

Attendance
Music Express members must also participate in their own school chorus (or participate in band) and consistently attend rehearsals on Tuesday afternoons as well. Only three unexcused rehearsal absences are allowed and all performances are mandatory. An unexcused absence is an absence from rehearsal after attending school the same day (with the exception of school-sponsored activities like science camp, GATE or student council.)
Appointments or sports commitments are not considered excused unless they are approved by me at least one day before rehearsal. Being late to rehearsal OR leaving early from rehearsal three times is considered the equivalent of one unexcused absence. Any combination of unexcused absences and/or tardies that totals three unexcused absences may result in dismissal from Music Express.
